Ashulia Women and Children Hospital (AWCH) is a non-profit and philanthropic organization, a concern of CWCH trust. In 2002, a group of distinguished Bangladeshi entrepreneurs and professionals recognized the need for a healthcare center to cater to the underprivileged. They envisioned providing specialized medical care to women and children at a minimum cost. Established in 2004 as the Center for Woman and Child Health, it later expanded into a full-fledged hospital to meet the broader healthcare needs of the community. In 2022, it was renamed AWCH to better reflect its services and mission, focusing on the overall development of women and children.
Located on 3.76 acres in Ashulia, AWCH is an eight-story building with over 250,000 SFT of space. The hospital provides a functional and visually appealing environment for patients, visitors, and medical staff. The surrounding lush green area creates a peaceful atmosphere. Since 2004, AWCH has been in operation, offering outpatient services 24/7. The hospital, with 250 beds, features 12 ICUs, 08 HDUs, 12 NICUs, and Neonatology. Over 100 doctors and physicians, including senior consultants, ensure comprehensive care. AWCH is equipped with modern facilities, including a Dialysis center, Diagnostic lab, Emergency wing, and more, fulfilling its commitment to provide exceptional healthcare.
The Centre for Woman and Child Health (CWCH) was conceived as a non-profit organization in 2002 by a group of Bangladeshi entrepreneurs and medical professionals to address the high mortality and morbidity in women and children in our and other low-income countries. In the 20 years that have since passed, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) fell from 401 per 100,000 live births in 2002 to 87 per 100,000 in 2021. Similarly, the under-five mortality rate (U5MR) was 81 per 1,000 live births in 2001 and this figure is predicted to fall to 22 per 1,000 live births in 2021.
Our aim is to promote the overall development of women and children with particular emphasis on their health and nutrition. We are dedicated to finding solutions to the problems of the underprivileged through their full participation. Our objectives are clinical service provision, human resource development, and research.
Over 100 doctors at this Centre are giving consultation services daily to about 500-900 patients – over 80% of whom are garment workers and their children. Alongside busy clinical service provision, the CWCH is active nationally in public health and nutrition dialogue and advocacy. The Centre’s primary focus on the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding allows CWCH to address not only the immediate problems of childhood malnutrition and mortality but also the long-term issue of noncommunicable diseases which have reached epidemic proportions in Bangladesh.
One illustration of this tailor-made response is financial support for those unable to pay. In its operation of over two decades, no patient has been denied service at the Centre because they couldn’t afford it. This non-profit hospital called the Ashulia Women and Children Hospital (AWCH) since 2022, continues to provide quality services at cost to its clients with compassion and empathy. We have no marketing budget – advertisement is solely by word of mouth from satisfied patients.
Although the hospital is equipped with cutting-edge technology backed by experienced and reputed medical professionals in their respective fields, we are trying hard to prevent the commercialization of medical care which is commonplace across the country. One such instance is our continuous striving to reduce unnecessary caesarean sections not only in our hospital but also in six other major maternity units in the Dhaka and Mymensingh districts. We are also in the vanguard of the breastfeeding movement with two of our Directors on the Board of Trustees of the Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF).
The key ingredient for the people-centred service at CWCH is the sincerity of intention of those who have invested personal resources for human welfare in the form of financial, technical, and managerial input. Allah Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala has said in the Holy Quran
‘And only spend to please Allah’.

Driven by a strong desire Mr. Khondoker Monir Uddin, Managing Director Shanta Holdings Limited conceived in the year 2002 to establish a health care facilities at Jamgora, Ashulia adjacent to Tongi-EPZ bypass near Dhaka to provide quality health care to the garment workers and poor people especially women and children of the local community at a very low cost and even at no cost for the ultra-poor. Subsequently Mr. Monir Uddin and Prof. Dr. MQ-K Talukder, national professor and a renowned child specialist of the country along with a small group of Bangladeshi professionals and entrepreneurs established the Centre for Woman and Child Health [CWCH] on October 2004 which is run by a ‘Board of Trustee’ chaired by Prof. Talukder. The CWCH is totally a philanthropic and non-profit organization and any revenues generated from this institution or any donations are being used only for the development of the Centre. Considering the establishment of new departments, expanded medical support and modern treatment facilities the centre has been recently renamed and officially registered as Ashulia Women and Children Hospital [AWCH]. However, it’s our pleasure to inform that recently we have shifted to 8 storied, 25,000 sq feet most modern new building having capacity of 250 indoor beds plus 12 ICU, 10 NICU, 4 PICU, 6 HDU and 16 Emergency beds. We have also established a standard CSSD and Laundry Linen service system. In the new building the wards and cabins [AC and non-AC] are quite spacious and we have added new facilities for giving comfort to our patients including easy nurse-calling system. AWCH is surrounded by a beautiful garden outside and a health safety playground for children inside.
